Sony Ericsson Xperia X1

Xperia X1

Xperia X1

Panel Baru Platform WM 6.1

Lini baru ponsel premium baru Sony Ericsson dikenalkan lewat seri Xperia.

KEYPAD
Navigasi Xperia termasuk komplet.
Pengujian : Eksplorasi keypad baik layar sentuh, keyboard maupun tombol panel
Nilai : 3,5

KAMERA
Sebagai ponsel premium, tak lengkap bila tak menghadirkan kamera built-in.

SKOR AKHIR : 3,2

Nokia 7100 Supernova

Nokia 7100 Supernova

Nokia 7100 Supernova

Cantik Tampangnya, Standar Fiturnya

DESAIN
Aspek desain ponsel ini mendekati sempurna. Tampilannya keren, rancangannya bagus. Nyaman digenggam dan enak dioperasikan. Tak banyak pernak-pernik tombol di sekujur badan ponsel, membuatnya tambah elegan. Padahal, material body bukanlah bahan yang istimewa.
Pengujian: Menggenggam, buka tutup slider
Nilai: 3,7
Catatan: Tersedia tiga pilihan warna casing

KEYPAD
Nilai: 3
Catatan: Tombol navigasinya benar-benar nyaman.

KAMERA

Nilai: 2,8
Catatan: Tak memungkinkan menyimpan banyak file MP3 karena memori terbatas

MEMORI
Penilaian: Penyimpanan file MP3
Nilai: 2
Catatan: Keterbatasan memori ini membuat fungsi MP3 player sangat minim

MESSAGING
Memiliki kemampuan banyak jenis messaging.

Nilai : 3,3
Catatan : Kualitas headset kurang maksimal

KAMERA
Walau masih berkualitas 2 Mpix, tapi kamera Bold memiliki kelebihan fasilitas geotagging.

Nilai : 4
Catatan : Menggeser-geser peta digital memerlukan rendering time

MOBILE OFFICE

MEDIA

Pengujian : memutar file audio/video, membuka file foto
Nilai : 3
Catatan : mendukung file video DivX, WMV, H.263 dan H.264

INTERNET BROWSING
Pengujian : Membuka halaman website
Nilai : 3,8

SKOR AKHIR : 3,5

LG KP500 Cookie - Si Cookie Sarat Hiburan

Cookie

Cookie

Ponsel layar sentuh LG KP500 punya fasilitas hiburan lengkap.

Pengujian : Mendengarkan lagu Aku Ada milik Dewi Lestari.
Nilai : 3,1.

Nokia N82 review: Comes with xenon

Nokia N82 is considered the next N-series bestseller and, guess what, it has already hit the shelves. Following the sweeping success of Nokia N73, it was a pretty sure bet that a worthy successor wouldn’t take long to appear. As we see it, Nokia N82 fits that description perfectly and our eagerness to test it for you should come as no surprise. So join us as we explore the world of Nokia N82.

Nokia N73 is said to be the most successful Nseries handset to date, with monstrous sales figures compared to the rest of the N-series lot. N82 comes to succeed it and become the most affordable of feature-loaded Nokia cameraphones. The Finns quote its price at 450 Euro pretax, which sounds reasonable, given the included features and the 2GB of memory card supplied in the package.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Nokia N82 review photos

The almighty Nokia N95 should probably also feel threatened for the lack of the sweet Xenon flash and the auto UI rotation of its N82 sibling. We still believe though the extra 0.2-inch difference in the display size will also play a major role in choosing between these two devices.

Another potential rival is the Sony Ericsson K850 although being a non-OS device actually puts it in a different market niche. Still, it would be wise of cameraphone lovers to carefully consider both devices before purchasing their next handset. So, to them, and any other interested in the qualities of Nokia N82 for whatever reason, our review takes off after the jump.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Nokia N82 all over

The retail package of Nokia N82 is as packed as Santa’s gift bag. The 2GB microSD card is a nice thingy to start with and it comes complete with a SD adapter. TV-out cable and a microUSB cable are next in line. It’s nice to have the microUSB data cable as these are rare enough due to the fact that virtually no other device than a mobile phone makes use of them.

The handsfree is quite stylish but unluckily its remote and headphones cannot be separated so you cannot use the remote with another set of headphones. The box also contains a whole bunch of manuals and quick start guide introducing you to the phone’s main features. A CD with the PC sync software is the final ingredient in this delicious retail package recipe.

Nokia N82 360-degree spin

Silver all over

Nokia N82 is a bar-shaped phone, measuring 112 x 50.2 x 17.3 mm. With a volume of 90 cc and 114 g of weight the N82 is somewhat on the wrong side of compact. But hey, we’re talking 5 megapixel phones and only the LG KU990 Viewty and Samsung G600 are a tad lighter than N82. Plus, it’s by all means pocketable, after all.

We are pleased with the build quality of Nokia N82 - no creaks or strange noises detected for the time of our review. Quality materials have been used and we think none of those are likely to appear in the long run.

The phone is finished in silver-tinted plastic with a glossy front and line-patterned back panel. The front panel is quite susceptible to fingerprints but they are not that visible on the silver surface.

Nokia N82 feels great in hand with great weight balance, so slipping off your fingers is quite unlikely.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Nokia N82 in hand - weight is very well distributed and the handset is quite comfortable to hold

By a longstanding tradition, we start our hardware inspection with the front panel. In the upper left corner of Nokia N82 is the ambient light sensor, while the video call camera is placed slightly to its right. The earpiece grill is dead center right above the 2.4" TFT display.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The light sensor, video-call camera and the earpiece right above the display

The D-pad is under the display with the two selection keys on each of its sides. The Menu and the Clear key are under the selection keys, while the Call and End keys are on the very edges of the phone. Finally, the newly adopted by Nokia multimedia key is accommodated between the right selection key and the Clear key.

All these keys are large and convenient enough to render no obstacles to usability. We wished the outer rim of the D-pad was just a bit wider so we won’t accidentally press the confirming center now and then when scrolling, but the situation is good enough as it is.

Nokia N82
The D-pad could have been a tad wider to completely rule out wrong presses

On the left side of Nokia N82 are the microUSB slot, the memory card slot and the charger plug. The microSD slot has a neat plastic cap but the other two apertures aren’t covered in any way, which somewhat spoils this particular side view.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The left side of Nokia N82 - microUSB and microSD slots and a DC charger plug • The memory card slot is covered by a silver lid

The right side hosts a whole bunch of controls. The stereo speakers are placed at its ends, with the zoom/volume key, the review key and the camera key in-between. The speaker placement is the same as on Nokia N95 and is obviously meant for using the handset in landscape mode. With such an advanced camera, it goes without saying that the camera key has half-shutter mode. The review key is a convenient and quick way for jumping to your lastly saved photos.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Nokia N82’s right side hosts the stereo speakers, the camera and gallery keys and the volume rocker

Jumping to the Nokia N82’s top we find the Power key which, like in all other Symbian phones, is also used for switching profiles and locking the phone. Next to it is the 3.5mm standard audio jack and the neck/wrist strap eyelet. It is quite convenient to have the audio jack at the top, so it is far easier to use with the phone inside a pocket.

The only thing to find at the bottom is the microphone pinhole.

"…Standby is quoted at 225 hours, while Nokia claims talk time is 4 and a half hours. Though not necessarily the most impressive figures, the battery is good enough to power the handset for about three days of moderate usage…"

The back side of the N82 is far more interesting and, you have our word, the strange pattern is by far not the only reason. There, we see the 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and the Xenon flash. As it turns out, the flash is the most powerful one we’ve seen in a mobile phone but this will be discussed later on in the review. The camera also has a lens protecting cover that opens by a small silver slider right above it. It is easy enough to locate with a fingertip and still not prone to accidental sliding.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The 5 megapixel camera and the Xenon flash are the stars backstage

Removing the battery cover you will find the BP-6MT battery with a capacity of 1050 mAh. Standby is quoted at 225 hours, while Nokia claims talk time is 4 and a half hours. Though not necessarily the most impressive figures, the battery is good enough to power the handset for about three days of moderate usage. In our case moderate means about half an hour of talk time and trying different application for about an hour each, plus taking a few shots with the flash on. It is a bit more than what you can expect from Nokia N95-1 for example.

Controversial keypad

The alphanumeric keypad of Nokia N82 is surely its most controversial component. The tons of negative feedback the Nokia N91 received for its similar layout does make one wonder why Nokia decided to have another go at it in such a landmark product as the N82.

The ergonomics of the keypad are not as bad as in Nokia N91 mainly because this time it’s level with the screen and each row is easy to reach. By no means would we call it good either. The keys are far too small and difficult to distinguish and, generally, typing without looking down is almost impossible. However, because of the ample spacing between keys we are giving it an average score. We still believe Nokia could have done a better job, especially with this particular phone.

The backlighting is even enough and, although not the strongest around, it does a decent job.

Nokia N82
The backlighting is even enough but not the strongest of all

Display

Nokia N82 is equipped with a 2.4" TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution. It is capable of showing up to 16 million colors but its quality did not particularly impress us. It does lack some brightness and the colors are a bit washed out compared to Nokia N95 8GB. Otherwise, in bright sunlight it is just as good as any other recent Nokia - the display remains perfectly visible and choosing the right angle to work with it is not in question at all.

Telephony

With N82 signal reception is just what you would expect in a high-end Nokia phone - simply flawless. The vibration is also strong enough to make sure you never miss an incoming call or message. The phone offers brilliant speaker quality and the sound during calls is very clear and without any interferences.

As far as ringing volume is concerned however, the situation is somewhat different. It is by far not the loudest phone around beating only the Apple iPhone among all 33 phones we have tested so far. In all honesty, Nokia N82 seemed to perform a bit better on some extremely high-pitched ringtones but these are hardly ever used anyway. Here is how Nokia N82 ranks among some other tested phones in our loudspeaker test. You can find more info on the actual testing process along with more results here.

Pure Smart

Nokia N82 runs on Symbian 9.2 OS with the Series60 3rd Edition user interface. The added Feature Pack 1 is no news for Nokia smartphones any more but still deserves mentioning.

Nokia N82

The 128MB of RAM is also an important factor to OS performance. In reality, 128MB is virtually impossible to deplete no matter how hard you try. Unless you do it intentionally, Memory Full warnings are not something you can expect on the Nokia N82 screen.

The phone’s main menu has only two different view modes. They are both well known: a 4 x 3 grid of icons and a list. In addition, you can choose whether you prefer your icons animated or not. For some reason the V-shape and Horseshoe views are not available with the recent Nokia handsets we get to test. Font sizes are also configurable depending on your preferences.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Different menu views

Navigating the menus is fast with instant response to key presses and no delays. Most screens of the user interface can be displayed in both portrait and landscape mode depending on the user preference. The screen automatically rotates when the phone is turned to the left. However, it sometimes won’t rotate straight away and needs a gentle shake before switching between view modes. The screen rotation is as fast as in Nokia N95 8GB - that is almost instant. Nokia hasn’t included any animation for the screen rotation - as seen in Apple iPhone - the screen just goes black for a second and pops back up in the desired mode.

"…Navigating the menus is fast with instant response to key presses and no delays. Most screens of the user interface can be displayed in both portrait and landscape mode depending on the user preference. The screen automatically rotates when the phone is turned to the left…"

The blue circle next to the icon of a running application is a well known Symbian indication reminding users to quit unwanted applications that are still running in the background. Luckily, the days when there was only a single alarm slot and the voice recorder was limited to a miserly minute are now long gone.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Multiple alarms can be activated on Nokia N82, each with its own repetition interval and due day

The active stand-by display is naturally also present with Nokia N82. This is a nice and convenient way to bring shortcuts to all favorite applications to your home screen. You can even assign shortcuts to websites of your choice for quicker access. The two soft keys functions can also vary. As the standard keypad lock pattern is a quick successive pressing of the left selection key and the asterisk , when the left kay is pressed in a normal day-to-day usage it will wait for about a second before acting as assigned to see if a lock command is to follow.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Active stand-by display on Nokia N82 holds a huge number of shortcuts

Otherwise, the automatic key lock is activated after a pre-defined period. The options are from 5 seconds to an hour and you can switch this feature off if you see fit.

The built-in memory is 132MB, which is a respectable figure by all means. The included 2GB microSD memory card comes in very handy for extending it but you can go for an even higher capacity card as user reports suggest. Accessing applications or any other files from the memory card is quick and you probably won’t notice any difference compared to accessing ones from the phone memory.

The multimedia menu is among Nokia N82’s highlights as seems to be the case with all other recent Nseries models. It is launched by pressing the dedicated key and provides quick access to the multimedia features of the handset. It is identical to the ones found on Nokia N81 and Nokia N95 8GB, with icons sorted thematically. They appear as drop-down menus when the respective tab is selected. If you find the menu layout unsuitable, you can freely rearrange icons until you’re pleased with the result.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The multimedia menu tabs can be freely reordered according to the user’s needs

As with any Symbian phone, there is a built-in voice recognition system. It is doing an amazing job, being fully speaker-independent and recognizing a remarkably high percentage of the user commands. Its performance can be matched only by Nokia N95 and N95 8GB.

Nokia N82

Themes

There are five preinstalled themes on Nokia N82, all of which are named Nseries. The rest is left to the imagination of the user, as you can download as many other themes as you wish. Before doing that make sure that you check out the pre-bundled ones as we personally happened to find them quite nice.

Phonebook

The phonebook of Nokia N82 is a true Symbian goodie. It is simply great. There is storage place for a virtually unlimited number of contacts and fields, with all the available memory potentially usable for contacts. Good luck trying to fill that up. Contacts can be freely ordered by first or last name and can naturally be searched by gradual typing of any of their names.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
A phonebook by Symbian

Editing a contact offers an enormous variety of preset fields and you can replicate each of them as many times as you like. You can also create new fields if you happen to be able to think of one. We personally find it difficult to think of something Nokia has missed here. Personal ringtones and video are also available for assigning. If you prefer you may group your contacts and give a specific ringtone to each group.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82

The Call log application, although not exactly a part of the phonebook, is also one of Nokia N82’s strengths. It can hold up to 20 call records in each of the tabs for outgoing, received and missed calls. These are all accessed with the Call key from the stand-by menu. If you enter the Log application from the main menu, you’ll see a detailed list of all your network communications for the past 30 days. These include messages, calls and data transfers. The period can be shortened in order to save some space but you are quite unlikely to do that, as even with a huge number of calls the log only takes a few miserly kilobytes of memory space.

Messaging

If you are all about texting, Nokia N82 might not be the perfect device for you. With a keypad like this typing doesn’t come as nice and easy as we would have wished. However, in terms of software the phone is performing a whole lot better.

There are four different message editors - one for each type of supported messages: SMS, MMS, audio message and e-mail. The SMS editor is the well know intuitive application for all Symbian S60 smartphones. It has a counter of the characters left to the limit of 160. There is also an indicator in brackets showing the number of separate parts the message will be divided into for sending.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The Message editor is a great application indeed

It goes without saying that a delivery report can be activated. The reports pop up on the standby screen when the keypad is unlocked, and are subsequently saved in a separate folder in the messaging sub-menu. When you are exiting the message editor without having sent the message, the editor prompts saving it to the Drafts folder or discarding it.

"…If you are all about texting, Nokia N82 might not be the perfect device for you. With a keypad like this typing doesn’t come as nice and easy as we would have wished. However, in terms of software the phone is performing a whole lot better…"

The MMS editor has virtually the same interface as the one we just described, with the added subject line being the only difference.

Nokia N82
The MMS editor differs only by the subject line

Now, the audio message is technically also an MMS but obviously it is more important for people at Nokia and they have created a separate editor for it. The editor can either record the message on the spot or use a previously recorded sound clip.

Nokia N82
The audio message editor has a somewhat different design

The email client won’t surprise anyone who has ever used a Symbian powered phone. It can download headers only, as well as the whole messages. There is also support for attachments, so Nokia N82 can meet almost any requirement regarding the user emailing needs.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Both the email client and the email editor do a great job

Generally, Nokia N82 is not the dream texting device but it’s good enough for occasional usage and if you are not always on the rush when typing messages. And, after all, this is about what most users do.

Music player

The music player is another good Nokia N82 application. There are no dedicated music keys but controlling it with the D-pad is just as easy and you won’t miss them much. A huge number of audio formats including MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA, are supported. The M3U playlists are also managed flawlessly and files are added to the music library by simply choosing the refresh option.

Sorting your songs by artist, album, genre and composer is automatic and searching tracks by gradual typing is also available. Transferring tracks to Nokia N82 can be achieved via Bluetooth, USB or by simply downloading them from the internet. You can also use a card reader for that purpose and transfer them directly to your memory card.

Upon completing a USB transfer, the phone automatically prompts scanning for new music tracks and, if allowed to do so, adds the new ones to the music library.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The music player offers various track sorting and some different visualizations

The player comes with five equalizer presets, which is a good count by any means. If it still seems insufficient, you can edit them or create new ones in a matter of seconds.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The available equalizer presets o creating a new one is quick and easy

In contrast to Nokia N81 for example, the music player of Nokia N82 can be switched off when it is not needed. This can save some RAM but with this amount of available operating memory this is not that important.

Being one of Nokia’s best equipped phones Nokia N82 naturally also includes support for the A2DP Bluetooth profile, which allows listening to your music on a Bluetooth stereo headset. We had no problem connecting any of the tested headphones.

Audio quality

We hoped that the audio quality of Nokia N82 would be closer to that of its N81 sibling rather than the Nokia N95 but, unfortunately, this was not the case. Our audio quality test showed that N82 is virtually the same as Nokia N95 8GB in terms of audio hardware and produces the exact same sound quality. So, even though the 3.5mm standard audio jack provides compatibility with a huge variety of headphones, do not set your hopes too high in terms of audio quality. More information about our audio quality test is available here.

Video player

Nokia N82 features a Real player for playing your video clips. The video player can be displayed in both portrait and landscape mode and can be switched to fullscreen. As you might have guessed, watching a video clip on a screen this large is a really enjoyable experience.

When in full screen, the softkey functions are hidden so that they don’t spoil the viewing experience and only pop up when a key is pressed. So, topped with the 2.4" display, it adds up to a decent performance though still behind Nokia N95 8GB standards.

"…Our audio quality test showed that N82 is virtually the same as Nokia N95 8GB in terms of audio hardware and produces the exact same sound quality. So, do not set your hopes too high…"

The handset also has a Flash player preinstalled but there is nothing much we can say about it. It does a job, no bangs and whistles.

If you get bored with the content on your Nokia N82, you can always turn the radio on for a break. The FM radio can automatically scan and save the available stations in your area. If internet connection is available the Visual radio application can download all the local stations and save them to the handset with their names. We would have preferred RDS support, though not having it isn’t really that much of a disappointment.

3D Gallery

The gallery of all Nokia N-series devices is simply great, so Nokia N82 just comes to confirm that. The 3D rotating view looks really nice, but we have to admit that the Navi wheel functionality of Nokia N81 would have been a nice addition to the Nokia N82. Not that it has any superior functionality, but its real fun to use.

Otherwise, no changes are to be seen here in terms of features - pictures can be viewed in both portrait and landscape mode and zoomed in up to 8x. Overall, picture browsing and zooming is fast but, as we noticed, a tad slower than Nokia N95 8GB. Not an easily noticeable difference, that is, but still when both phones are put side by side the N95 8GB gains a narrow advantage.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
The 3D rotating gallery looks great and has nice functionality • Looking at a picture in portrait and landscape mode • Zooming in on a picture

The gallery also offers a nice slide show with customizable settings, including automatic browsing and playing a pre-defined track from your phone.

If the gallery file-management functionality (which even includes sending multiple files at a time) is insufficient you can use the file manager. It allows you to do almost anything you can think of with your files.

Nokia N82
File manager is well familiar to all Symbian users

There is also an application manager to take care of the installed applications on Nokia N82. Not much to talk about here, as it is identical to the one in any other Symbian device. Its functionality boils down to providing details about installed applications, removing them and keeping a log of movements in both directions.

Nokia N82

The useful "Search" application is also present in Nokia N82. Its reserved line in the active stand-by menu no longer comes as a surprise. After all, an application this useful really deserves to be conveniently placed. The application itself finds almost every item in your Nokia containing a given keyword. From messages to settings, every bit of data is checked and then all results are shown.

A camera above all expectations

The camera is surely Nokia N82’s element. Nokia have thrown in a lot of efforts on the matter and have come up with a truly wonderful camera. Not that it is any different in terms of lens, sensor or picture processing from Nokia N95 but the included Xenon flash really makes a difference.

The convenient cap keeps that precious camera lens safe from scratches.

The camera set up time is really short. It is about the same as in Nokia N95 8GB, totaling a bit less than three seconds. With Nokia N82 the shot-to-shot time can also be reduced to about 2.5-3 seconds, which, again, is about the same as Nokia N95 8GB. Of course these times are only achievable with the automatic preview turned off. A solid result by all means, loosing to Sony Ericsson K850 by only tenths of a second.

The camera user interface is the same as in N95 8GB and offers the same extensive settings - starting from manual white balance and ISO sensitivity and including exposure compensation, sharpness and contrast settings, as well as various effects, which are labeled color tones. Gridline can also be applied to the viewfinder to assist you in framing you photos, using the photographic rule-of-thirds. Using it to align your subjects and place points of interest on or near the lines and their intersecting points makes your photos more professional and aesthetic. The rule-of-thirds also applies to landscape shots. For example, the sky should take either one third or two thirds of the frame, instead of placing the horizon in the center. The sequence mode and self-timer are no news. The Xenon flash can be set in four ways: automatic, always on, red-eye reduction and always off.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82

Small font tooltips are displayed to help you understand what the phone is doing at each specific moment (processing image, for example).

The picture quality is great. It’s the best you can find on the market, which is kind of surprising. After all Nokia N82 is supposed to be an all-in-one device and it’s strange that it outperforms even dedicated cameraphones when it comes to camera quality.

Speaking of which, the guys at Nokia have even managed to go another step further. The only thing Nokia N95 and Nokia N95 8GB were to blame for was the inadequate LED flash. Now Xenon is implemented with Nokia N82 and this takes us to a completely different level.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Putting the flash aside the cameras of Nokia N82 and Nokia N95 do not differ at all

Furthermore, it is the best flash to be found on the market dethroning Sony Ericsson K850. It’s not even a close call; the difference hardly needs any further comment.

You can also have a look at the camera review of the original N95 and the shootout with the Sony Ericsson ultimate cameraphone - the K850. The camera module of Nokia N82 is performing exactly the same way as the N95 one, but it’s faster and it’s backed up by a xenon flash. So if we were to put the N82 and the K850 head-to-head, Nokia would have scored way better than Sony Ericsson.

"…The only thing Nokia N95 and Nokia N95 8GB were to blame for was the inadequate LED flash. Now Xenon is implemented with Nokia N82 and this takes us to a completely different level…"

Also, be on the lookout for the second part of our 5 megapixel face-off, which includes some of the most exciting 5 megapixel cameraphones recently released.

The secondary camera can also be used for taking pictures. It is quickly accessed from the camera interface and can be used as a fast and convenient way to make self-portraits or contact images. It is also capable of recording video but it is hard to imagine that the clips it will produce will be usable in any way.

Video recording

The quality of the videos recorded with Nokia N82 is exactly the same as of those recorded with any of the Nokia N95 versions. Read: great. The phone captures video at VGA resolution at 30 frames per second, which is way beyond the skills of any of the phones of the competition. The exception here is the 5-megapixel LG KU990 Viewty, which is the only worthy rival for Nokia’s trio when it comes to video recording. Videos are captured in MPEG-4 format and have automatic or manual white balance, depending on the user preferences. The other available features are night mode and color effects. The only thing you have to be careful about is not to run out of storage because videos of this quality fill up your free space much faster than you might guess - a minute of video takes about 20MB of memory. This means that about 100 minutes of video can be stored on the 2GB memory card, provided that there’s nothing else on it.

Connecting people

Transferring data is what Nokia N82 really loves to do. Every common data transfer medium is supported. USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP just start the count. All kinds of network connectivity are also on board - from HSCSD, through GPRS and EDGE to 3G with HSDPA support - Nokia N82 has it all. To complete the wireless communication tally, Wi-Fi with UPnP support is also on board. Even the memory card slot, is here and comes in handy if you have a card reader at your disposal. The missing thing with Nokia N82 is the Infrared port but we are not going to pretend that we are even slightly missing it. So there is basically no case, in which you won’t be able to transfer the data you want from or to almost any device.

Web browser

Browsing the internet with Nokia N82, like with all Nokia smartphones, is a pleasure. No matter how elaborate the web page, it fits perfectly on the screen and looks almost exactly like on a PC. The virtual mouse cursor takes browsing another level up. It is easy to control and generally works great. A mini-map can be activated to help navigating your way around large sites where lots of scrolling is required. The zoom level is also adjustable at the expense of only a few key presses.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Browsing Gsmarena.com with Nokia N82

The large amount of RAM is surely one of the best things that could happen to the browser, as it is one of the most RAM-demanding applications indeed. Now, even if you load very heavy web pages and have a few applications running in the background, you are extremely unlikely to run out of RAM. The 2.4" display is not as impressive as the 2.8" screen in Nokia N95 8GB but still makes even very small fonts readable.

Organizer

The time-management skills of Nokia N82 are really top-notch. Just name the application and you can count on it that the handset has it. We start the exploration of the large application package with the calendar. It has three different types of view - monthly, weekly and daily, and four types of events available for setting up - Meeting, Memo, Anniversary and To-do. Every event has its own unique fields, some of which allow an alarm to be activated at a preset time to act as a reminder.

The Lifeblog application automatically collects your images, videos, texts and multimedia messages, sounds and blog posts in diary-like style. It then allows easy browsing, sharing, storing and searching of theses items.

The mobile office is also very well presented, with preinstalled applications able to open Word and Excel files seamlessly. Unluckily, editing documents is not supported by the included version of the Quickoffice. If you would like to be able to edit these files you will have to purchase the complete application at the Nokia Download center. PDF reader is also included and a ZIP manager allows extracting archived files straight from your phone.

The other included organizing and time-management applications are: a great unit converter, calculator and voice recorder, as well as the Notes application. We are not going to get into detail with them, as their functionality and performance are familiar enough.

N-gage reloaded

Nokia N82 comes with three preinstalled games. Two of them are based on the new N-gage platform and even though they are demo versions, playing them is a nice experience. The included titles are the same as the ones found on Nokia N95 8GB - Fifa 2007 and Asphalt 3 Street rules. In all fairness, we faced some difficulties with the controls of FIFA 2007, which didn’t seem properly chosen. In fact the only mobile phone where this game was easily handled was the Nokia N81, thanks to the two dedicated gaming keys which did a great job.

The third game to be found on Nokia N82 is Snake. First to feature on the original Nokia N95, this 3D game is surely one of the best achievements in this area. We did spend quite a number of hours playing it and we really enjoyed the experience.

Finding your way around

Like the Nokia N95 versions, the N82 has a built-in GPS receiver. Having tested all of them we are safe to conclude that their performance is virtually the same. Unluckily, the problem with the slow initial satellite lock still exists with Nokia N82. The phone needs quite some time to find you initial position, especially if you start it when you are in a moving vehicle.

The built-in A-GPS somewhat reduces the time needed for that purpose but at the cost of (in most cases) pricy data transfer.

The built-in GPS receiver works with the Nokia Maps application, which is one of the software applications to offer the most detailed maps. Furthermore, it is free and relatively easy to use. Well, at least the basic information is free, because charges apply to the voice guidance and turn-by-turn navigation. You only get a three-day trial that goes with the new version of the Nokia Maps application, so you can see if the voice navigation is worth the extra dime.

In other words, if you want to make use of the built-in receiver you;ll be better off relying on Nokia maps as not all other third-party applications can detect and work with the integrated GPS receiver.

Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82 Nokia N82
Nokia Maps has nearly the most detailed road maps among all navigation solutions

So, leaving this aside, we have to admit that the Nokia Maps application itself is not bad at all and has very decent looks. Furthermore, its route planning algorithm can be easily customized to the user preferences. Toll roads and motorways can be avoided and so can tunnels and ferries. The route selection can be set to either fastest or shortest. The app is also usable for pedestrian navigation or you can switch the GPS receiver off to use instead of your paper map.

The overall impression of using the Nokia N82 as a GPS navigation system is positive, except for the flaws already pointed out. Still, if you don’t have the highest expectations, you might find the Nokia N82 GPS perfectly adequate.

Final words

Nokia N82 is the kind of gadget to make high hopes inescapable and it is important to know whether it lives up to the responsible job of being the N73 successor. And here it is: in our view, it carries the burden lightly. N82 has all the premises to become a true bestseller, combining full smartphone functionality with the best camera on the mobile phone market. Upgrading from Nokia N73 seems the definitive choice, if not the only option.

"…N82 has all the premises to become a true bestseller, combining full smartphone functionality with the best camera on the mobile phone market. Upgrading from Nokia N73 seems the definitive choice, if not the only option…"

As for the rest, who are considering Nokia N82, we say it’s a buy you will hardly ever regret. Looking at your options first won’t hurt though. The simple math tells that Nokia N82 with an 8GB microSD memory card costs about the same as Nokia N95 8GB, so the choice between the two is purely a matter of priorities. Whether you prefer larger screen or xenon flash should tilt the scales this way or the other.

As for the cameraphone lovers, the decision is as simple as that - if you want the best camera on a phone and you’re willing to pay for it, Nokia N82 is the way to go.

Nokia N81 preview: Hands on N-Gage

The Nokia N81 is an exciting Symbian smartphone that comes loaded with multimedia capabilities and promises tons of fun. Flaunting 8 gig worth of storage, the Nokia N81 8GB comes in the slider form factor and features a nice 2.4" 16M color TFT display, 3G with video calls, Wi-Fi, a 2 megapixel snapper, stereo speakers, several dedicated music and gaming keys and finally, a unique Navi wheel D-pad that is unlike everything you’ve probably seen around in mobile handsets.

While we are currently working on the actual exclusive in-depth review of the Nokia N81 8GB (thanks to importgsm.com who provided us with the handset), we decided to lose no time but share with you our first impressions on one of the hottest multimedia handsets this winter season before the actual review is ready. We hope that in a few days we will be able to provide you with a full review.

Ok, we think we got you excited enough now. So feel free to browse along on for more of our Nokia N81 teaser review.

Designed to impress

The Nokia N81 measures 17.6 mm in thickness and weighs good 140 g. However it’s surprisingly pocketable and it’s real joy having it in our office. You may notice a rather strong resemblance to the Nokia 6110 Navigator, which we reviewed earlier. Now, as you may probably know there are two editions of the Nokia N81 to be produced - a vanilla one that comes with a microSD slot and a 1GB or 2GB microSD card in the retail package, and Nokia N81 8GB edition, which we got for testing.

Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81
The N81 is rather nice and comfortable to hold

The front panel of the Nokia N81 8GB is dominated by the large 2.4" 16M color TFT display with QVGA resolution. As you know Nokia displays are our favorites. Currently, probably only the iPhone display outmatches those.

Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81
Nokia N81 has a great large display

You will probably notice that all the keys are flush with the design lines. It must be noted that some of them are rather hard to press - some of them need a good, hard shove in order to get them to work. Otherwise, pretty much the whole bunch of the keys has a good tactile feedback. And when we say "bunch" we really mean it - the front panel hosts as many as 11 keys without counting the alphanumeric keypad that is. While some of them may seem touch sensitive at first sight, they are not (except for the Navi wheel that is).

Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81 Photos of Nokia N81
The keypad looks as a touch sensitive one • that on top the display is actually the gaming keys

Touching your way around

The Navi wheel is probably the feature that brings the highest wow-factor with the Nokia N81. The thing is that the navigation D-pad allows touch sensitive input - by flowing your thumb along the lines of the silvery square you can scroll through the Gallery or the customizable Multimedia menu. It’s incredibly pleasant to work with the Navi wheel and the onscreen performance usually matches the speed of your thumb, which makes things feel really natural. It even makes you wonder how come it’s only now that we see such a solution for the first time from any mobile manufacturer. As an N-series offspring pictures, music and video is in the center of the Nokia N81. The user interface is rather zippy and we liked how it handled pictures in the Gallery - zooming, panning, and scrolling is really fast.

Sony Ericsson T650 review: T-Series refueled

Introduction

The exciting new Sony Ericsson T650 pleases the eye, in a wink. A far descendant of the legendary Sony Ericsson T610/T630, the T650 is dressed to kill and packs in some serious high-tech ammo. It’s all there - 3G, TFT display with QVGA resolution, stereo Bluetooth, FM radio, a cracking 3 megapixel camera - and all those are fitted into a bar-shaped handset measuring only 12.5 mm in thickness. You may have heard of Sony Ericsson W880, well… meet his big brother. A serious promise, indeed! But i rarely take things for granted - join me as i get my hand all dirty while i put the Sony Ericsson T650 through its paces.

Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650

Main features

  • Slim and stylish
  • TFT display with a QVGA resolution
  • 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
  • Memory card slot with hot-swap support
  • 3G support with video calls
  • Walkman-style music player
  • FM radio

Main disadvantages

  • Only 16MB internal memory
  • No EDGE
  • Records video in ancient QCIF (176 x 144 pixels) resolution only

An inspiring example of how a modern bar-shaped mobile should look, the Sony Ericsson T650 impressed me as soon as i set my eyes on it. The comparison to the Sony Ericsson T610/T630 will obviously be totally out of place here, since these handsets are more than outdated. You can look at the appearance of the T650 as more of a revival of the T-series, slammed into oblivion by the K-series. The probable reason for placing this new contender in the T-series could be that the K-series will be reserved for Cyber-shot handsets. Who knows! When we look around for competition, it is more than obvious that the T650 will be hitting hard on the Sony Ericsson W880 market share. i did like Sony Ericsson W880 when i reviewed it several months ago - at just 9.5 mm it surely looked the part. The Sony Ericsson T650 obviously hasn’t been on the same diet, but at only 12.5 mm thickness and with a sleek metallic finish, it doesn’t lose on looks either. Furthermore, it outperforms the W880 on a number of aspects. The Sony Ericsson T650 is a clear winner when it comes to comparing specs, but rest assured, i won’t just rely on that. It’s time that i roll up my sleeve and get on with project "Sony Ericsson T650 review".

Metal on the outside, plastic from the inside

The Sony Ericsson T650 will be selling in two distinct color variations - light green and dark blue . The one i got to test is obviously the green one. The T650 has a nice metallic body - exactly as advertised. Make a note here; i’ll get back to that aspect later on in the review. The handset measures 104 x 46 x 12.5 mm and weighs 95 g which provides for a nice feel when held in hand.

Above the display you can see the speaker in the dead center. The video calls camera is located on its right, while the ambient light sensor is on the left. The TFT display measures 1.9" in diagonal which isn’t quite what you’d expect in a higher mid-range tier handset. Just so you get a dimensional perspective, the W880 has a 1.8" display, while the K800 sports a 2" one. The manufacturer claims the Sony Ericsson T650 display is mineral-glass covered, which should prevent scratches. The keypad on the T650 has a great styling, the keys are small, and yet comfortable. Most of the Sony Ericsson users out there would be happy to see that Sony Ericsson have ditched the infamous navigation joystick and have replaced it with a sleeker D-pad.

The right side of the T650 incorporates the usual Fast port used for attaching the charger and all peripherals. The Fast port is getting relocated on the side of increasingly more Sony Ericsson handsets. I suppose that it has something to do with its increased use for plugging stereo headset for listening to music.

The bottom part of the T650 sports only a microphone pinhole and holes for attaching a neck or wrist strap. For that purpose you would have to remove the back cover first. The top part of the mobile features the On/Off key and a sliding release key for the back cover. The On/Off key is really minute but that doesn’t pose any usability problems.

The left-hand side of the T650 nests the dual volume key and the camera shutter key. They are all made to blend seamlessly into the handset design. The slight elevation plus the nice tactile feedback provide for a great user-friendliness of the controls.

The back side of the body has a nice brushed metal finish and the back panel represents one whole piece covering the back entirely. At the bottom you can see the loudspeaker grill. The camera lens and the LED flash are located on the top. The camera is advertised as having a 3.2 megapixel resolution but, as with some other Sony Ericsson products, its effective megapixel count is exactly 3.15 megapixels. The lens is located within a bulging black frame, which in our humble opinion spoils the sleek looks of the device.

Obviously without it the engineers wouldn’t have been able to fit a 3 megapixel module into the body. The immediate result from such a solution though might mean that the camera lens cover would easily get scratched or smudged with fingerprints.

Removing the back panel reveals something that we hinted at earlier on. Although the body of the Sony Ericsson T650 seems and feels metallic, underneath it’s plain plastic. Not a bad solution we might say - handsets with all metal structure usually pay a certain weight penalty and they go way over the 100g marker.

Now back to our lab mouse. When you release the back cover by sliding the release key located on the handset top side, several things may attract your attention. The M2 memory card slot is located on the left, not far from the Fast port. It allows (for) quick hot swapping of memory cards as you don’t need to remove the battery. The device can host Memory Stick Micro cards with a capacity of up to 1GB. The SIM card slot is located next to it. The SIM is removable with the battery off only. Forgive me for stating the obvious, i just couldn’t help it.

The Sony Ericsson T650 gets its juice from a Sony Ericsson BST-33 Li-Poly battery with a capacity of 930 mAh. Battery times are not yet officially published, but our test handset managed to endure almost 4 days of fair usage in a 3G network - so expect a decent overall performance from this puppy.

Usability checklist

The Sony Ericsson T650 provided us with a nice user-friendly experience. It handles nicely and the metallic finish is pleasant to touch. The handset fits perfectly in one’s hand and i’m pleased with the ergonomics of all the controls.

Talking about usability, we must pay due attention to the display. It’s been a while since i saw any improvements by Sony Ericsson in the display department. Nokia handsets have long been unrivaled when it comes to legibility under direct sunlight. Their patented hybrid electronic displays that consist of both light emissive and light reflective elements have been providing users with unsurpassed legibility under direct sunlight. Sony Ericsson have lagged behind in that respect and in fact they still do. The Sony Ericsson T650, however, offers the best display i’ve seen from Sony Ericsson so far. First off, it has a mineral glass cover to prevent scratches. Next, it offers improved usability under direct sunlight, and last but not least, it offers really attractive color effects. By color effects i mean that when looked from an angle, the T650 display changes colors in an instant. For example, the standard green color scheme of the user interface magically turns blue when you have a look from the right. The pictures below demonstrate the effect, or you can go back to the beginning of this review and take a look at the first pictures of the T650 taken from different angles.

Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650
Sony Ericsson T650 display in the dark: different viewing angles

The keypad of the Sony Ericsson T650 offers tiny square keys set sufficiently apart from each other. They seem to remind us of the controversial round keys of the Sony Ericsson K810. Much like the Cyber shot K810, these keys in fact provide for great user friendliness and are likely to be appreciated by keen texters. Responsiveness and tactile feedback are great and you can hardly make any typos since they are spread wide apart. The keypad is illuminated in white and with the added wave-like light effects it gains points both on usability and looks. More on those light effects is to come later on in the review.

So let’s hit the streets

Sony Ericsson T650 is without a doubt good at making and receiving calls - we wouldn’t expect any less than that. The loudspeaker is loud enough and you wouldn’t miss an incoming call even in noisy surroundings. You can hear cracks when you play a track with more bass at the highest volume level.

Catchy user interface

The user interface in Sony Ericsson T650 is the standard non-smartphone Sony Ericsson user interface. Honestly, the user interface is becoming dismally familiar - almost 2 years now since they last upgraded it a bit. It offers great user-friendliness, but new mobiles equipped with it don’t offer any new functionality over previous models. Some of the new Sony Ericsson mobiles to be launched this year will have user interface with enhanced multimedia capabilities. And of course the addition of Flash Lite themes support to most of the new Sony Ericsson handsets will certainly liven things up.

As most previous models, the Sony Ericsson T650 comes with a dedicated Flight mode.

In active stand-by mode the screen displays information about the network signal, battery strength, current date and time, plus the next alarm that’s due. Pressing the navigation pad in any of the four directions can start a user-programmed feature or application. The main menu itself is made of a matrix grid with 4 x 3 animated icons. All sub-menus are in list view with tiny icons on the left side. Response is fast in every submenu and application.

Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650
Standby view • the main menu • a listed sub menu

Speaking about Flash Lite themes, it must be noted that the T650 not only comes with Flash Lite support, but additionally, some of the preinstalled themes are Flash-based. They change not only the color scheme and the wallpaper, but also the menu icons themselves. The home screen animations affect the keypad lighting in an intriguing way. When the animated flying boxes that come with the default theme hit the bottom of the screen, a light wave splatters across the keypad.

Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650
Three of the preinstalled themes

Almost all of the preinstalled themes can change their color scheme according to a built-in time schedule. For example, the basic theme featured a green wallpaper and green main menu icons for most of the day (10:00 - 19:00 actually). For about an hour after that a grey color scheme takes over before it eventually dissolves to blue at about 10 p.m. From 10 p.m. on, the theme goes really dark blue and won’t change before 07:00 when it starts gradually turning green going through several shades of blue. Overall, this is a nice effect, one that we’d like to see more often in Sony Ericsson handsets to come.

As with all recent Sony Ericsson handsets, the Sony Ericsson T650 has an Activity menu which has a dedicated shortcut key on the keypad. The Now running tab of the menu offers multi-tasking - for example you can run two Java applications and listen to the radio or to the music player simultaneously. The Activity menu also offers quick access to new events, the web menu and the My Shortcuts menu, which contains a list of frequently used features and can be modified to the user preference.

Phonebook, as good as it gets

The phonebook interface is simple and straightforward. Either the SIM or the phone contacts can be set as default for the phonebook. Both lists cannot be displayed simultaneously. Otherwise, you can choose to use the handy option of duplicating any new contacts that you save in the phone’s memory to the SIM card. The maximum capacity of the phonebook is 1000 entries but you can save up to 2500 phone numbers - no change here. Contacts can be ordered by First or Last name. They are searchable by gradual typing of the desired name.

When adding a new contact, there are five positions available for phone numbers: Mobile, Home, Work, Fax and Other. This is the first tab of fields for the new contacts. The second one is for email and web addresses. The third is for assigning a picture, a custom ringtone and a voice command. The fourth goes for Title, Company and postal address. The last, fifth tab, is for additional information and birth date. Upon adding a birth date, you’re prompted to choose whether to add it to the calendar and set a reminder.

As most other Sony Ericsson handsets, the Sony Ericsson T650 has a Voice Dialing feature. You can activate it with a longer press on the down volume key. In order to use it though you would have to prerecord your voice commands in a very quiet environment.

Call management

The Calls log is divided into four different tabs. They are: All, Answered (Received), Dialed and Missed. The tabs can take up to 30 call records altogether, which are shared between the separate tabs. When there are several calls made to a single contact, only the last call gets recorded.

Texting comes easy

All messages, except emails, use one Inbox. No matter what kind of message has been received, it goes to the common Inbox. Only email messages have their own separate Inbox. The phone also offers an RSS-feed reader, using the NetFront web browser. When typing a message, there is a character counter, which would alert you when you get close to the 160-symbol limit. The T9 dictionary goes without saying.

Excited about the music player, aren’t you?

Sony Ericsson T650 music player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+, WAV, WMA, M4A and MIDI file formats. It is the Walkman player version 1.0 used in Sony Ericsson K800 and K810 for example. In fact, most Sony Ericsson W-series handsets feature the same music player with several exceptions. The only difference between theirs and this one is that the latter doesn’t feature the MegaBass equalizer preset. Since Sony Ericsson T650 supports multi-tasking, the player can be set to run in the background. Sound is nice - as long you’re using the player with a good headset, that is.

The video player of T650 is decent and videos can be watched in landscape mode. Unfortunately you cannot fast-forward videos. The player can zoom in your video up to 32x, in an attempt to make amends.

There is nothing new in the file browser department as well. It allows you to mark files (single or multiple), copy them, move them, and also create and delete folders as you please. There are three tabs of file lists - one for the phone memory files, one for the memory stick files and one shared for all files. By selecting a given tab you can filter the files shown. The integrated memory of the T650 is 16MB. There is also a Memory Stick Micro M2 memory card slot. The size of the memory card shipped in the retail package should be 256MB.

Browsing your pictures is as easy as ever - you could do that in a list view with or without thumbnails. You can also view your pictures as a thumbnail grid of 3 x 3 or 5 x 5. The video files can also be browsed as thumbnails. Highlighting a video thumbnail won’t make it playing as a preview, as it did in Sony Ericsson K810.

The interesting thing about the picture browsing is the Timeline view, which allows you to filter the pictures according to the month they have been taken in. After you specify the month, you could even choose the exact date. That sort of image filtering is offered by computer picture browsers and digital cameras. The Timeline sorting is seen more and more often lately in the recent Sony Ericsson phones.

The actual pictures can be viewed in portrait mode (just as you would on any other phone) or in landscape mode if you prefer. While you are going through your pictures the phone preloads a lower quality preview to allow your fast browsing. Pausing browsing once you’ve found a picture you would like to view in full, will result in loading it with its normal quality.

Sony Ericsson T650 Sony Ericsson T650
Viewing the pictures in landscape mode is much more natural

You can zoom in to the actual size of the picture or even more, up to 32x. Given the available megapixel count, zooming beyond 8x would rather produce smudged spots than reveal more details. While you are at zooming, a small mini-map of the picture appears to let you know exactly where you are on the photo.

While browsing pictures, you can easily do some basic editing or send them as MMS and email or via Bluetooth and Infrared. Should you choose more sophisticated editing, the PhotoDJ application is at your disposal. With it you can easily adjust levels, lighting, brightness and contrast, remove red-eye effect, apply some color effects to the picture such as negative and sepia, or add a frame or textbox to the picture. I’m pleased with its capabilities - it does great with removing red eyes without spoiling the whole picture.

Bulging 3 megapixels

The Sony Ericsson T650 comes with a 3 megapixel auto focus camera with a LED flash. The camera user interface is the same as the one we already saw in Sony Ericsson K550, W880 and K810. The camera is advertised as having 3.2 megapixel resolution, but as with some other Sony Ericsson products its effective megapixel count is exactly 3.15 megapixels.

The camera offers night mode, self-timer, panorama, frames, and burst shooting modes. It also features white balance control and several scene-specific presets. Some color effects are available, too. The BestPic shoot mode is not present here, but then again, even the Cyber-shot cameraphone Sony Ericsson K550 didn’t have it. However, the Burst shot mode almost makes up for that.

When it comes to focusing, there is a dedicated macro mode and of course you can turn off the auto focus should you need to.

In our firmware version of the handset the shutter sound couldn’t be switched off via the camera interface; you can only change the sound type. The only way to deal with it is to switch the handset into Silent mode.

Some camera menu options

Judging the camera quality from a beta unit is a risky business, but we can safely assume that Sony Ericsson T650 will be inferior to the 3 megapixel Cyber-shot models K800 and K810. The resolution is about what we expected from the phone. The colors however are not quite right. You can see the strong red cast of the outdoor photos, but it will be probably fixed in the retail version. Interestingly enough out T650 performed excellent indoors – the color is right, the resolution is good and noise is under control. All in all – excellent results for a phone this slim.

Sample pictures taken with T650

T650 captures video at the low QCIF resolution. The options for the video camera are pretty much the same as those for the still camera with very minor differences. It’s about time Sony Ericsson upgraded the video recording capabilities of their mobile phones. Until that happens, i’ll stop publishing sample video clips taken by Sony Ericsson phones - there isn’t that much to see really.

As regards the functionality of the secondary VGA camera, i’m more than happy with it. The other party’s video feed is viewed in a large frame in the middle of the screen while you view your own image in a small frame in the lower left corner. There is also a possibility to view your own image mirror-like, meaning that it gets reversed and looks as if you are staring at yourself in a mirror. It’s much more natural that way. You can also zoom digitally your image at a 2x degree or choose to replace your live video feed with a picture of your taste. You can also do that during an actual video call and it’s handy when you want to show the other call party an interesting picture you have taken for example. The options don’t end here. You can also control the exposure compensation of the camera or even switch it into a night mode. There are 3 different video quality modes: Smooth, Sharp and Normal. Smooth delivers a smoother picture flow while Sharp provides more detailed images.

Browsing away

Besides 3G and GPRS for fast data transfers, video calls and content-streaming support, the handset offers the usual connectivity capabilities such as USB, Bluetooth and an Infrared port.

As i tested, the integrated HTML Access NetFront Internet browser is good enough and does more than an all-right job. It has plenty of options - you can view the pages fullscreen with no menus showing and you can even browse your Web pages in landscape mode. It has WAP and picture modes. It supports content created for HTML 4.01, xHTML 1.0, CSS and Java script, WAP 2.0. The supported security protocols are SSL/TLS.

Generally, the Smart-fit function of the browser does well fitting the web content onto the screen. Scrolling is fast once the page has loaded completely. Our impression is that the Smart-fit function has got an upgrade and does a better job than the one in previous Sony Ericsson models.

The Sony Ericsson T650 supports Bluetooth 2.0 with the Human Interface Device (HID) profile, which allows the phone to be used as a remote control for PC and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Furthermore, the phone could be used as a Bluetooth modem for accessing the Internet on a PC or notebook computer.

Bluetooth support also includes the A2DP profile, allowing listening to music on a stereo Bluetooth headset.

The T650 supports local and remote synchronization of contacts and calendar events. The local one is with Outlook and a PC, while the remote synchronization works with remote servers. The USB connectivity of the phone has two modes - one for file transfers and one for USB Internet - to put it simply, the second one is for using the phone as a modem.

You do the math!

The Sony Ericsson T650 offers many time-management features. There is an Organizer icon in the main menu and it contains several applications: Calendar, Tasks, Notes, Calculator, Synchronization, Timer, Stopwatch, and Light. The Calendar offers monthly, weekly and daily views. As i mentioned before, when you add a birth date in the phonebook, the phone prompts adding it to the calendar. Tasks can be two types: simple Tasks and Phone calls. Notes are written as simple as messages; T9 dictionary can be used here as well. The Light application let’s you control the LED flash and use it as a torch.

The Alarms are now part of the main menu. There are five alarm slots available. Each one offers a lot of options - you can choose to repeat the alarm on chosen days of the week or everyday. Text and a picture can be added to the alarm. Furthermore, the alarm’s behavior can be defined in case the time it is due to go off comes while the phone is in silent mode.

The Voice recorder doesn’t have any limit to the duration of the recordings, since all the free memory is available for the purposes of the application. The Calculator is the regular Sony Ericsson one, which you have probably already seen. It offers the basic functions, no bells and whistles.

Some other applications include the MusicDJ and VideoDJ. VideoDJ is for making video clips from scratch or for editing existing recording using special transition effects and by adding background music. It can be a very amusing application. MusicDJ is a very simple application for creating custom polyphonic melodies.

Not exactly gaming-happy

There is only one game preinstalled in our test Sony Ericsson T650. I see the Lumines Block Challenge for the first time - it is a Tetris-like game with rather basic graphics. I didn’t find it intriguing, but of course, you can always download new games.

Final words

Well, that leaves one of the latest Sony Ericsson handsets, the T650, safely at the end of the gauntlet. This mobile will face the public’s high expectations and, as far as i can guess, it will have no problems meeting them.

I found the Sony Ericsson T650 to be a top-notch solution, able to meet most of your mobile needs, be it calling, texting, making pictures or listening to music - all that in an eye-catching form that won’t go unnoticed wherever you go. Probably the only disappointment you may have with it, is the low quality video capturing capabilities - QCIF video at 15 fps just doesn’t cut the mustard these days.

So after all is said and done, you bet the Sony Ericsson T650 is more than enough to keep you busy while you are waiting for the next Sony Ericsson headliner - the five-megapixel Sony Ericsson K850.

# Penunjuk Jalan Dalam Genggaman #

Lamban? Tentu saja tidak. Cuma buat urusan serius? No way.

Agak ke kanan tampak tombol on/off.

Life in Mono, nuansa lagunnya ‘kena’.

Seru ketika diajak serius, menyenangkan sewaktu menikmati waktu senggang.
